I see in the new feature list that compressed backups are supported for sql 2008. Is there something that needs to be configured for that option to show up?

You must edit your config.xml file.
Then in the tools / backupwh section, add the property compression="true"

backupfolder="D:\dbbackup\"
backupurl="http://xxxx/mla/dbbackup"
compression="true"
usesysadminconnection="true"
/>
